Delivering More Than Just Meals

A warm meal is a luxury many of us take for granted but, for some seniors living in our community, financial or physical challenges can make getting the right nutrition each day difficult. Meals on Wheels Salem County provides the help local seniors need to get good meals and we are proud to be a part of it.

For the almost 20 years I’ve worked at Atlantic City Electric, I have coordinated our bimonthly Meals on Wheels deliveries from our Carney’s Point office. Two days each month, several volunteers join me to pick up meals from Meals on Wheels at the drop-off location and make deliveries to approximately 12 homebound seniors in the area.

It’s become very personal for me. We all grow older and one day that could be me or someone I love that needs assistance. Over the years, you also get to know the people you are delivering to and you build friendships. They look forward to our delivery each time, just as much as we look forward to bringing it to them.

One of our regular deliveries is to Mr. Smith. He is blind so the food delivery is imperative for him because it allows him to continue living independently without needing to prepare food. In addition to the delivery, he loves the company and someone to talk to. Delivering his food and helping him get everything set up is a chance for us to speak with him and spend some time visiting, which can often mean even more than the meal. Knowing that our efforts can bring joy to people, such as Mr. Smith, is a great feeling.

Across southern New Jersey, we support more than 300 other community organizations. In 2018, nearly 250 employees volunteered more than 21,000 hours which totals more than 2,600 work days! Click here to learn more about our ongoing community initiatives.
